Radio Controlled clock Operating Instruction

WHAT IS A RADIO CONTROLLED CLOCK?

A radio controlled clock is a clock that is capable of receiving a time signal transmitted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The transmitter, located in Fort Collins, Colorado, is linked to a cesium atomic clock. The cesium clock is the most accurate time keeping device in the world with a time deviation of less than one second in one million years.

Your Howard Miller radio controlled clock is specially programmed to interpret the signal and set itself to the correct local time.

COVERAGE

The signal transmitted by the NIST is strong enough to cover the entire continental United States and parts of southern Canada and northern Mexico. As with any radio signal, geographic features, weather disturbances, and structural characteristics will at times affect the strength of the signal. Best signal reception occurs between 10:00PM and 5:00 AM.

LOCATING YOUR CLOCK

You should not place your clock

  • on a metal surface
  • within several feet of an electrical raceway, radio transmitter/receiver, personal computer, television, satellite dish, air conditioner, light dimmer switch, electrical motor, or any other appliance that could interfere with the clock's reception of the radio signal.

You should place your clock

  • near a window
  • with the dial or back facing Fort Collins, Colorado

Radio controlled Movement

STARTING YOUR CLOCK

  1. Open or remove the rear cover of the clock (table clocks only) to access the movement.
  2. Install a fresh AA size alkaline battery (use alkaline batteries only) in the battery holder according to the (+) and (-) symbols shown in the diagram. DO NOT use a rechargeable battery in this clock.
  3. Press the time zone button corresponding with your area.

NOTE: The time zone can be set or changed at any time after the battery is installed. If no buttons are pressed, the clock will default to Pacific Time. If more than one button is pressed, the clock will set the time zone to the last button pressed.

AUTOMATIC TIME SETTING

  1. After the battery is installed the second hand will advance and then stop. The clock will remain stopped and will search for the time signal.

2. If the clock is able to receive the time signal it will automatically set the hands to the correct time.
3. If the clock does not receive the time signal within 5 minutes it will fast-forward the hands to 4, 8, or 12 o'clock. The clock will remain stopped and will continue to search for the time signal every hour.

POOR RECEPTION / MANUAL TIME SETTING

If your clock does not automatically set itself within 24 hours after inserting the battery, it is probably due to poor reception. This is normally a temporary condition. Refer to the instructions for "LOCATING YOUR CLOCK" and move the clock to another location for improved signal reception. Bestsignal reception occurs between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM.

You may wish to manually set the time and then permit the clock to automatically receive the time signal when reception  conditions have improved. To manually set the time, press and hold the Time Set Button until the hands are set to the correct local time.

The clock will now be reliably set to the local time and ready to automatically pick up the signal once reception improves.

DAYLIGHT-SAVING TIME ADJUSTMENT

Adjustments for daylight-saving time and standard time are made automatically.

NOTE: If you live in an area that does not adjust for daylight-saving time, press the DST OFF Button. This will turn off the  daylight-saving time feature. If you accidentally press the DST OFF button or move to an area that does adjust for daylight-saving time, press the DST OFF button again to turn the daylight-saving time feature back on.

BATTERY REPLACEMENT

When replacing the battery, follow the instructions for STARTING YOUR CLOCK

NOTE: Any time the battery is removed from the clock and replaced, you will need to reselect your time zone. Also, if you live in an area that does not adjust for daylight-saving time, you will need to press the DST OFF button again. Please refer to the section for DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME ADJUSTMENT.
